What we did

The Brief

Ibotta, a household name for savvy American spenders and savers, hired us to have their New Year’s wish granted: to be catapulted above other apps and services within the cash-back space in search engine results via inbound links. With the goal to make every purchase rewarding for consumers at a time when their wallets and pockets are already stretched thin with a new browser extension, Ibotta sought to showcase how Americans are saving and spending during the holiday season. The PR strategy faced one major obstacle: the holiday season saturates the media with constant content.

How could we cut through the noise and obtain impactful media coverage for Ibotta during the most wonderful time of the year?

The Execution

To help Ibotta stand out during the holiday season, we created a strategy that would attract media attention through earned coverage in a variety of both national and regional publications. Our in-house data analysis team quickly developed the “Holiday Spending and Buying Index”, highlighting the top deal-hunting shoppers through coupons, cashback, and other rewards to develop a georanking campaign to generate coverage locally in each state (with Texas ranked #1 nationally). This data from the georanking was used to craft engaging stories about holiday spending and saving trends, as well as capitalize on New Year’s saving and resolutions. Knowing that the holidays are financially difficult for many consumers, we launched a rapid response plan to monitor popular topics like coupons and shopping apps, ensuring Ibotta remained prominent in the media throughout the season.

The Result

In the development and analysis of internal, proprietary data combined with public, third-party data such as government statistics, we were able to drive an incredible media surge for a brand looking to support consumer saving and smart spending with their new browser extension. Data-led geogrankings featuring the states with the most “savvy spenders” and the Holiday Buying and Spending Index acquired backlinks and coverage in prestigious publishing outlets such as Yahoo, MSN, The Motley Fool, and InStyle.

As a result of these PR initiatives, Ibotta not only climbed in search rankings for important keywords, but gained notoriety as the go-to source for national and regional savings in the extremely competitive coupons and deals space.
