Average Annual Grocery Spend In 2020
The pandemic clipped our wings in 2020. We spent less time eating out socially and more time at home. These enforced changes have led to many dramatic changes in our habits and spending patterns, one of which has been the amount we’re spending on groceries. The average American spent 9.4% more on groceries in 2020 compared to 2019, with the average annual grocery bill coming to $4,442 per person.
Some states were more impacted than others
Nebraska saw the highest increase at an individual state level, with a 60% increase in spending compared to 2019. Other states which saw large spikes include Utah and South Dakota. The people of California actually spent 12% less on their groceries in 2020, with Massachusetts seeing the largest decrease at 35%.
What have we been spending our money on?
Of all the different categories, spirits saw the largest spending increase with a 33% rise across the year. Spend on meat, seafood, and poultry jumped by 16%, with the meat alternatives subcategory seeing a huge 34% spike in spending. The biggest subcategory increase overall was storage, which saw a huge 605% increase compared to 2019. A side effect of people stocking up on essentials, perhaps?

Analysis of the weekly amount spent by the average American shows not only that we love to stock up for Thanksgiving, but also a sharp spike when people began panic-buying in March.
TOP Data analyzed weekly spending data of 900K Americans. This spend was mapped to 55 grocery retailers. Example Merchants include: (Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Safeway, Kroger, Albertsons, Wegmans, Publix Super Markets etc).
We cross-checked our findings with publicly available information from each organization, and any correction provided was incorporated into the report. Viewing this information in concert, we determined the weekly purchases at each merchant over the last 15 months by state.
